On September 15, 2007, a brown bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge on Old Highway 40 near Lake Tahoe, California. Apparently spooked by approaching cars, the bear climbed over the side, lowering her 250 lb body in between concrete girders...100 feet above the granite gorge below. Witnesses say there were claw marks etched into the concrete where she grasped for footing. Animal Control didn't take action at first, supposedly unconvinced of the feasibility of a rescue. When they found the bear still there the next morning, however, California Highway Patrol and Truckee and Nevada County Animal Control units enacted a plan to save her. 
Volunteers positioned a nylon net below the bear while an official tranquilized her, causing her to fall into the net below.
They lowered the net to the floor of the ravine, after which the groggy bruin got up and stumbled back into the woods. Amazing rescue!
